WoodHaven Custom Calls: Mark Scroggins

In the world of Outdoor TV it's very important to look professional for your sponsors and fans. This includes media kits, back drops, graphic design or even something simple as a banner. We have been using Studio D for the last 4 years and everyone that sees our media kits usually comments on how well it's put together. Last year Studio D designed an outstanding backdrop to use during our trade shows and was instantly a hit with all our fans. Logo Design

To understand what a logo is, we must first understand the main purpose of a logo.

The design process must aim to make the logo immediately recognizable, inspiring trust, admiration, loyalty and an implied superiority. The logo is one aspect of a company's commercial brand, and its shapes, colors, fonts, and images usually are strikingly different from other logos in the same market segment. Logos are used to identify. A good logo is distinctive, appropriate, practical, graphic and simple in form, and it conveys the owner's intended message. A logo should be able to be printed at any size and, in most cases, be effective without color. A great logo essentially boils down to two things: great concept and great execution. Concepts fail with poor execution and poor concepts loose traction before they get started.

What's so difficult about creating a good logo?

They're small, they look easy to do, so no problem, right? When you only see the result of a designer's efforts, the logo creation can look like it was a simple task, but it's not. A logo takes thought and creativity, and many design and business elements combine to make a good one.

Our Process

Design brief  - This is where we get your ideas, learn about your company and what you want to represent.  We may also give you some information to help guide you through the thought process.

Research - We conduct research on the industry itself, its history and competitors. What are the trends, the do's and the don'ts.  We also rely on our experience in the industry to make good decisions about your brand and logo.  We know what works!

Sketching and conceptualizing - We will develop the logo design concept(s) around the brief and research. This is the single most important part of the design process.  Many times we use a process called sketching, which is just that...we start with a pencil and paper.  After that, it's always easier to actually design it on the computer.  We typically begin designing in black and white. This allows us to focus on the concept and shape, rather than color, which is subjective in nature. We also keep in mind printing costs: the more colors, the more expensive it will be for the business over the long term.

Delivery  - We will deliver our best concept(s) to you explaining the design and business aspects of why we did what we did.  From this, we get feedback from you.  What you like and what you don't like and then repeat this process until we have a solid concept.

Finishing - A concept takes a life of its own in the finishing process.  This is where we "jazz it up" with colors, textures and shading, all while maintaining the effectiveness of the standalone concept.  This is an iterative process involving the Delivery process again until we reach..."That's the one!"
